One of the many benefits of handmaking earrings is that you will have near limitless variety of what you can make and wear.  Since they are less expensive than purchasing retail, you will be able to afford a larger variety of earrings.  You will have a pair to match every outfit you own.

Handmade earrings make excellent gifts for friends, family and loved ones.  Not only do they have value of their own, but they are also like giving a piece of yourself away.  Whomever you grace with the gift of something you’ve made yourself will likely appreciate it even more than if you had merely bought it at a store. They’ll know that your heart and mind went into crafting the earrings.

I will have information on this site on how to make different kinds of earrings, including beaded earrings, hoop earrings and chandelier earrings. Once you get started, there will be no limit to what your imagination can create.

This earring making basics video shows two ways how to attach an eye pin to a French hook. You can use these methods to attach any pin, whether it be an eye pin or a head pin to a French Hook. If you want to attach a pin to a ear post loop, you will have to bend open the pin, as ear post loops do not typically bend open.

Welcome to the hematite hoop earring project. I am going to take you through the step-by-step directions on how to make simple pair of beaded earrings.  For this project I will be using two inch-long head pins, two surgical stainless steel French Hook earrings and two sets of three different beads.

Once you have all of your jewelry findings laid out on your table, you will need a pair of round-nose pliers.  Any pair of round-nose pliers will do, but I prefer the ones with spring back action. These pliers open automatically when you release them. This makes jewerly making a LOT easier to do, especially when you are advanced enough to use a pair of pliers in each hand.

The first step is to feed the head pin through the beads. You will notice how the headpin is fed through the top hole of the hematite hoop only. If the head pin were to have been fed through both holes, you would have been able to see the head pin through the hoop. This way, the hoop kind of floats at the bottom and the head pin is out of site.

As with any head pin earrings, you need to form a loop at the top to attach it to the ear posts or French Hooks.  To keep this hoop centered, you should first bend the head pin about 45 degrees to the side.

Once it is bent, you can grasp the tip of the head pin with the round nose pliers and roll the pin towards you, back towards the bend. This action creates a round loop at the top of the pin.

Be careful not to close the loop just yet. You have to connect it to the French Hook first!

After the French Hook is in place, you can continue to roll the loop closed. You may need to pinch it completely shut, and even give it a small twist or other adjustments to make it look “just right”.  When you are finished, repeat these steps for the second earring.

Congratulations! Once you have finished these instructions, you will have made a wonderful pair of hematite earrings that you can wear yourself, or give away as a meaningful gift.  All the best!

 When you first start out making your own earrings, you’ll likely have a manageable amount of supplies. As you get more experienced and aquire more findings, beads, rings, wire, etc, you will need to store them in such a way that finding what you are looking is not a project unto itself. I’m going to share with you how I have my supplies organized. If you have any ideas on how to organize jewelry supplies, I’d love to see your comments. I have my gold and sterling silver wire on top. (I know it’s messy. You can keep them coiled better. I just got a bit lazy)

I found these large organizers at a local hardware store. I imagine they are designed to hold different shapes and sizes of screws, etc, but I find them perfect to store findings and jump rings of various sizes and metals. I label each with masking tape on the front so that I can easily find what I am looking for. They also have larger bins at the bottom. I use one of them to hold my hematite beads.

For my smaller beads, I have a bead box. The bead box is a tray with a lid that contains 24 smaller containers with lids. I label each of these with masking tape too. I keep my semi-precious small beads in one tray and my glass beads in another. These small containers have a glass top which helps a great deal, as I can see what they contain without picking them up or having to open them.

I keep other tools and equipment in a medium sized Rubber Maid tub. I’ve seen handy tool holders that you can keep on your work bench or table. I don’t own one myself though.
